Pros and cons

Living in Canada

Pros

  • One of the best immigration systems globally — Express Entry can grant PR in under 6 months
  • Universal healthcare (Medicare) and strong social programs including employment insurance and child benefits
  • Genuinely multicultural society — over 20% of the population is foreign-born, and diversity is celebrated
  • High quality of life with clean cities, low crime, and excellent public education
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) offer additional immigration pathways beyond federal programs
  • Strong worker protections with mandated vacation, parental leave, and employment standards legislation

Cons

  • Housing affordability crisis — Toronto and Vancouver are among the most expensive cities in North America
  • Cold winters in most regions — temperatures of -20°C to -40°C are common in many provinces from November to March
  • Healthcare wait times can be very long — months for specialist referrals and non-emergency procedures
  • Credential recognition for foreign professionals (doctors, engineers, lawyers) can be slow and restrictive
  • Job market outside major cities is limited — most opportunities concentrate in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary
  • Cost of living has risen sharply — groceries, telecom, and insurance are notably more expensive than in the US or Europe

Common questions about Canada

Canada Express Entry — is the 6-month processing time realistic?

by future_canadian · 1 week ago · 3 replies · ▲ 178

visa-immigration

I submitted my Express Entry profile (CEC stream, 478 CRS) and got my ITA last month. IRCC says 6 months processing. People on forums say it can be much longer. What's the real timeline in 2025?

pr_holder_20241 week ago▲ 94Best answer

CEC here, got my eCOPR in 4.5 months from AOR. The community tracker (immigration-timeline-app.vercel.app) shows CEC is generally 3–6 months. FSW takes longer, usually 6–12 months. PNP is somewhere in between. The biggest variable is whether they request additional documents — that can add 2–3 months.

immi_data_nerd6 days ago▲ 71

Check myimmitracker.com — they have thousands of real cases with exact dates for each stage. Way more useful than IRCC's estimates. Filter by your stream and visa office to get a realistic picture.

vancouver_expat5 days ago▲ 56

One thing nobody tells you: after eCOPR, the PR card itself takes another 1–2 months to arrive. And you can't leave Canada until you have it (or a PRTD). Plan accordingly if you have travel coming up.
